About The Department: The Information Technology Services Department is responsible for enterprise technology operations for the City of Alexandria. ITS provides technology services and solutions to City departments to enhance service delivery. ITS aligns its work with City needs by providing leadership, resources, expertise, and products that enable departments to better serve the City’s residents, businesses, and visitors. ITS resources support initiatives funded through the multi‑year Information Technology Capital Improvement Plan (IT/CIP) to improve the overall technology landscape. The City of Alexandria’s ITS Department has been a Top Ten National Finalist in the Digital Cities Award program for over the past 19 years. Position Summary: The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Network Engineer I in the Network Operations Division. The Network Engineer I is an entry‑level position responsible for supporting the day‑to‑day operations of the organization’s network infrastructure. This role involves assisting with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network devices, troubleshooting basic network issues, and working under the guidance of more senior network engineers. The ideal candidate should have a foundational understanding of networking concepts, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Key Responsibilities Network Support Daily Monitoring: Use network monitoring tools to check the status and health of network devices and connections, ensuring all systems remain operational. Review logs to identify anomalies such as packet loss, latency spikes, or unusual traffic patterns. Basic Troubleshooting: Resolve common network connectivity issues, including wired and wireless connections, IP conflicts, and VPN connections. Utilize diagnostic tools like ping, traceroute, and nslookup to locate problems. Document troubleshooting steps for future reference. User Support: Act as the first point of contact for network‑related support requests, responding to help desk tickets and resolving issues in a timely manner. Assist users with networking access, including Wi‑Fi, shared drives, and remote access tools. Configuration & Setup Device Configuration: Assist senior engineers in configuring network devices, such as VLANs, IP assignments, and basic routing protocols, following established templates and procedures. Network Cabling: Participate in physical infrastructure setup—running and terminating Ethernet cables, organizing patch panels, labeling cables, and installing racks or servers. Documentation & Maintenance Documentation: Create and update network diagrams, device configurations, IP address assignments, and change logs. Network Maintenance: Perform routine checks, back‑up configurations, monitor device performance, and apply security patches and firmware updates. Device Upkeep: Clean hardware, check connections, replace faulty components, and manage spare parts inventory. Inventory Management: Track equipment serial numbers, warranties, locations, and usage of network resources. Security & Compliance Access Control: Update firewall rules, configure ACLs, and monitor access logs for unauthorized activity. Basic Security Monitoring: Use tools to detect threats and document incidents. Compliance Support: Ensure network compliance with industry standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI‑DSS; participate in audits and implement required changes. Collaboration & Coordination Team Collaboration: Work closely with senior engineers and IT support teams to resolve issues and support projects. Vendor Coordination: Manage external vendor support for hardware issues and coordinate quotes for new equipment. Learning & Development: Attend training, workshops, and on‑job learning opportunities; stay current with new technologies. Project & Change Support Project Assistance: Support network-related projects, including installation of new equipment, migrations, and capacity expansions. Testing & Deployment: Participate in lab testing of new technologies, help deploy solutions, and create test plans. Continuous Improvement Skill Development: Pursue certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or CCNA; engage in peer reviews and knowledge sharing. Process Improvement: Suggest and implement improvements to processes, documentation, and workflow efficiencies. Mentorship: Learn from senior engineers and gradually manage small leadership roles; share knowledge with peers. Minimum & Additional Requirements Two‑Year College Degree; at least three years of experience performing systems programming work in a mainframe, LAN, or WAN environment, or equivalent experience combined with college courses in computer science or related field. Completion of college‑level courses in computer science, business administration, or a related field. Preferred Qualifications Experience: 0–2 years in network engineering, IT support, or related field. Certifications: Basic networking certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCENT, or equivalent. Technical Skills: Fundamental understanding of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS. Familiarity with routers, switches, and firewalls. Basic knowledge of monitoring and troubleshooting tools. Soft Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow instructions and work under guidance. Eagerness to learn and develop technical skills. Work Environment Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and handle network equipment; work in data centers or wiring closets. Work Schedule: May require occasional after‑hours work for maintenance, on‑call support, and special projects. Travel: Minimal travel may be required for on‑site installations or training.
